Speed trap

Does anyone else thing there’s something fishy about the stretch of road called “I-15″ that spans the distance between Las Vegas and the western border of the state of Nevada?

I don’t drive to Utah alot (or even Vegas), but I’ve been about 3 times in the last year and every time there seems to be construction – only there never seems to be actual construction.

First come the orange signs telling you that a construction zone is up ahead. Then there’s the “Reduced Speed Ahead” warning before you’re told to slow it down to 55 mph. There are, of course, orange cones and barrels lining the side of the road and the occasional sign reminding you that traffic fines are doubled in work areas. The only thing that’s missing is men in orange vest performing the work that we’re being warned about.

To their credit, there are a few workers. I saw a few 12 miles into the construction zone and then a few more after another 10 miles. At one point I saw a guy walking around by himself with what appeared to be a hobo’s bag thrown over his shoulder, but I couldn’t be sure.

Are they doing it for the money? They keep the “construction” signs up year round knowing that they’ll be able to collect twice as much from every motorist who has learned to ignore the red-herring signs. There’s no other explanation for it. It’s an outrage!

Do the workers seriously need a 10 mile traffic buffer zone to keep them safe? I don’t think so. There should be laws against these kinds of set-ups by the government. Shoot! There should be laws against gambling and prostitution too.
