No man is an island, they say.
I’m not exactly sure what that means anymore. I think it’s got something to do with our influence on one another, but these days we understand that even lonely islands effect the world in terms of climate and weather patterns.
So maybe we are all islands, and the saying should be something like, “No man is a speed limit sign”, because we all know no one ever pays attention to those things. But their presence makes you subject to being ticketed – so maybe that saying just shouldn’t exist any more.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is that somehow, here in my water-less island of the Coachella Valley, I’ve unintentionally managed to keep secret the fact that I’m moving to Utah. I’m not sure who knows and who doesn’t know, but I’m hoping I cover a lot of ground with this blog.
If you don’t read my blog, let me know and I’ll call you and tell you.
For those of you who are just skimming and missed it in the body of that paragraph:
Utah – I’m moving there
I’m sure you’ve got a lot of questions. Why is he moving? I thought he hated Utah! Is he going to school? What about Texas? How has he survived in the Coachella Valley without water? I hope I can answer some of those, but if you’re left with confusion, please feel free to call me. You didn’t delete my number, did you?
1) Why: I’m moving to Utah to go to school. I was accepted to BYU a few months back and I’ll be studying Psychology. It’ll take me a few years get my Bachelors and we’ll see if I go on for a graduate degree. I just don’t know yet.
Everyone automatically assumes that I’m looking to get married. You know – yeah, I might get married while I’m up there. I think there’s even a pretty good chance. I just know that considering the frequency (or rather infrequency) I date, I’d better take some drastic steps now unless I’m looking forward to celebrating my 30th birthday as a single man – and I’m not.
2) When: I’m leaving in about 2 weeks. My housing contract starts on the 2nd of January, so I’ll be driving up on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th – whichever day the weatherman says has the lowest chance of my car ending up in a snow-filled ditch. School starts on the 8th.
3) Where: Utah. Provo to be exact. I’ll be living in the Carriage Cove apartments. They’re not the best looking. They’re not the closest to campus. But for $285 a month, you can beat the size of that room.
4) Texas: I haven’t been in Texas for 8 months now. I got fired from that job 7 months ago. I still find people that ask.
5) Water: There is actually a small supply of water here in the desert. My parents have a few barrels they keep on the side of the house in case it runs out. We have enough to drink and cook, but we have to take quick showers.
Well, please spread the word about my move. No good-byes yet. I’ll be around for a little while.
