Class of 2006, remembered

I was getting ready for work the other day and caught site of my brother’s High School yearbook. I’d seen it before, but never really looked at the cover … so I did. On the front was this short bit of text perhaps meant to inspire pride or nostalgia in those who would one day be alumni.

Here’s how it read:

we thought we were inflexible
we thought we were unbending
but … with a distinct vision we learned that we are
unrivaled

Now can someone tell me what the heck that means?

Inflexible, unbending, perhaps firm and strong and determined. At least that’s what they thought! Then one day they finally realized, “hey, we’re not strong and determined. We just don’t have anyone to challenge us! It’s not that we’re the biggest fish in the pond. We’re the only fish in the pond!”

If there is any sort of meaning to that bit of prose, that’s all I can come up with.

Who would want that as their slogan? Who came up with that? Who approved that? Golly! Throw in a few buzz words like “unbending”, “unrivaled” and “distinct vision” and all of a sudden it’s cool?! Who cares that it doesn’t make any sense?
