The mark of Pete and Pete

Last night Nick was watching a DVD of The Adventures of Pete and Pete. The kids in our family are big fans of that show, but I’m not sure how many other people even know about it. Even people my own age don’t seem to remember the show even existing (while I, on the other hand, remember the days when Pete and Pete were nothing but shorts in between the real show on Nickelodeon)

It was during one of these episodes that I realized how much The Adventures of Pete and Pete has affected my life. While some people quote movies, I quote this episode.

The episode is Time Tunnel, the story of older Pete’s desire to date Ellen and younger Pete’s plan to travel back in time at the hour daylight savings time ends.

Older Pete meets up with his friends outside a store and finds one of them riding the mechanical horse. “He bet me a dollar I wouldn’t do it. But I’m doin’ it”. “I said doll hair, not dollar”. And the quote:

“Well, give me one doll hair!”

I don’t know why. Here’s another. Endless Mike lets older Pete borrow his car for the big date and is showing him all the special date modifications he’s made. He’s installed a couple of buttons in the center console that automatically (and quite rapidly) recline the seats all the way back. The quote:

“You hit the go button … then you know.”

There was another one, but I can’t remember it right now. But rest assured, next time I feel the urge to say whatever it is I say from time to time, I’ll say it, pause, and smile as I remember the all important Time Tunnel adventure of Pete and Pete.
