What’re you studying?

I intend to finish reading through the Book of Mormon before the end of the year … and i’m doing some heavy reading these days. I’ve got it out at work, and it’s been drawing a lot of questions.

“What’re you studying in the Bible?”

“What’re you reading? I mean, which book?”

To these I answer, “It’s the Book of Mormon actually.” That usually receives a telling, “Oh ….”

Once I got, “I saw you reading the Bible. Are you a born-again Christian?”

Hmm, tough question. I don’t remember what I used to say when people asked me that on my mission. But I knew what he meant, and no, I don’t fit that “born-again Christian” mold.

So I told him, “No, I’m a Latter-Day Saint – a Mormon. It’s kind of the same.” He gave me a “Oh, I’m familiar with it.”

Then there was the “Are you in Seminary?”

For a second I thought she might be a fellow Latter-Day Saint trying to strike up a conversation. But then I remembered that I’m much too old to be in LDS Seminary (she’d know that if she were LDS), and the world has a Seminary all its own … for people about my age and up.

So again, “No, just doing some casual reading.”

Maybe one of these times all take the opportunity given me and use it to actually share the gospel. But I’ll probably wait until I find someone who hasn’t already turned themselves off to it.

But one thing is for sure. If you bring your Book of Mormon along with you wherever it is you go, and read it rather than just leave it in you car, you won’t have to wonder where your next missionary moment will come from.
